The World Cube Association has canceled the 2026 WCA Asian Championship after failing to find a new host location.
The event was originally planned for Shenyang, China. The WCA ruled out that location in March. It cited problems with planning and running the event that they claimed were outside of their control.
The WCA Board and its Major Championships Team (WMCT) then claimed to look for another host. Those talks did not lead to a new location.
The team apologized to cubers living in Asia. They will go without a WCA championship for their continent this year.
“Hosting a successful Asian Championship in 2028 is a top priority for the WMCT,” the announcement said.
The last WCA Asian Championship took place in Putrajaya, Malaysia, in November 2024. A return in 2028 would leave 4 years between events.
AMSA’s Separate Asian Championship
The Asian Mind Sports Association (AMSA) is planning an Asian championship of its own.
As we reported in August, the first AMSA Asian Speed Cubing Championships are set for January 21-24, 2027. AMSA has announced $100,000 in prize money.
Of that, $30,000 will go to individual events, $10,000 to national or regional teams, and $60,000 to clubs.
The individual events are 3x3, 3x3 One-Handed, 2x2, Pyraminx and Square-1. Cubers from around the world can compete in the club format.
AMSA’s event won’t award the 2026 WCA Asian titles. Each awards titles under its own system.
We covered the differences between competition systems in “What Makes a Solve Official?”. AMSA has its own rules and officials. Its results don’t count toward WCA rankings or records.
AMSA’s event listing still shows the January dates without a host city. Its championship announcement says more details will follow through its official channels.
