Max Park - 7x7 WR Single and Eighth Straight Western Title
Last week’s Weekend Ahead highlighted West Coast Cubing Western Championship 2026 as one of the biggest events to follow, and Western delivered.
Max Park reclaimed the 7x7 world record single at Western Championship 2026, recording a 1:32.07 in the final.
Park’s final-round results were 1:32.07, 1:47.68, and 1:42.66, giving him a 1:40.80 mean and the event win. The single improves on Lim Hung’s 1:32.92 world record from UniKL MIAT Cube Open 2026, set earlier this month.
The result continued a rapid exchange at the top of 7x7. Lim’s 1:32.92 had broken Park’s previous world record of 1:33.48 from Nub Open Trabuco Hills Fall 2025. Two weeks later, Park lowered the mark again by 0.85 seconds.
The record also adds to Park’s long-running world record collection. Park entered the result with 90 world records on his WCA profile, making the 1:32.07 his 91st world record.
Park also won the 3x3 head-to-head title at Western Championship, defeating Zerui Cheng 3-1 in the final. The event marked the first time Western Championship used the WCA head-to-head format to decide the 3x3 champion.
The win extended Park’s Western Championship winning streak to eight consecutive years, dating back to 2018. Cheng reached the final after defeating Dylan Miller in the semifinals, preventing a Park-Miller championship matchup. Miller later defeated Brendyn Dunagan in the third-place match.

Yufang Du - 4.36 3x3 Average and 3.34 Single
One storyline that proved worth watching came from the deep Chinese 3x3 field at Hangzhou Open 2026.
Yufang Du improved his 3x3 average personal best, recording a 4.36 average in the second round. The result improved his already third-ranked world average by 0.01 seconds, moving his mark from 4.37 to 4.36.
Yufang Du remains behind only Yiheng Wang and Xuanyi Geng in the global 3x3 average rankings.
He also recorded a 3.34 single in the final, tying Ryan Pilat for eighth in the world for 3x3 single. The solve moved him 0.05 seconds ahead of Bofan Zhang in the single rankings, while his new average gives him a 0.02-second edge over Bofan Zhang in the average rankings.

Yufang Du finished third in the final with a 4.60 average. Yiheng Wang won the event with a 4.42 average, while Xuanyi Geng placed second with a 4.53 average.
Aitor Ibañez Larrea - Spanish 2x2 NR Average
Aitor Ibañez Larrea set a new Spanish national record in 2x2 average at GAN CubingVic 2026, recording a 1.05 average in the first round.
The result moved Larrea into the world top 15 for 2x2 average and marked the first Spanish national record under 1.10.

Larrea nearly produced an even bigger result in the second round. His five solves were 0.67, 3.39, 2.09, 0.84, and 0.70, giving him a 1.21 average after the fastest and slowest solves were dropped. With three sub-1 solves in the round, Larrea came close to putting together one of the fastest 2x2 averages ever recorded.
Albert Mandicó Sampol also recorded a 1.19 average in the second round, moving to second in Spanish history and inside the world top 25.
Larrea went on to win the event with a 1.30 average in the final.
Feliks Zemdegs - 4.12 3x3 PR Single
Feliks Zemdegs recorded a new 3x3 personal best single of 4.12 at Spark Melbourne Autumn Saturday 2026.
The result came on his first solve of the second round and marked the first 3x3 single PR of Zemdegs’ career that was not also a world record or Oceanic record at the time.
Watch the 4.12-second single video below.
Zemdegs has competed in the WCA since 2009 and has spent much of his career at or near the top of the global 3x3 rankings, making any new personal best from him notable.
Despite the 4.12 single, Zemdegs finished third overall in the competition with a 6.48 average. David Epstein placed second with a 6.45 average, while Riley Dexter won with a 6.40 average.
The podium was separated by just 0.08 seconds, making it one of the closest 3x3 finals of the weekend.
