The Weekend Preview: August 7-9, 2026

British Columbia completes its two-week provincial championship, the world’s top two 3x3 solvers compete on consecutive days in China, and PSL Michigan sends another competitor to the season-ending championship in Las Vegas.
Welcome back to the Speedcuber’s Digest Weekend Preview, where we look ahead at the potential storylines going into the weekend.
Yiheng Wang and Xuanyi Geng Get Two Chances in Two Days
Maoming Open 2026 takes place August 8 in Maoming, China, followed one day later by Zhanjiang Open 2026 roughly 100 kilometers away.
Both psych sheets are led by Yiheng Wang and Xuanyi Geng, giving the two fastest 3x3 competitors in the world another pair of opportunities to push the event forward.
Xuanyi enters two weekends removed from recording the first official 3x3 average with all five solves below four seconds:
3.84, 3.81, (3.87), (3.20), 3.36 = 3.67
Yiheng nearly responded one week later at Shanghai Summer, winning with a 4.01 average that left him two hundredths of a second away from another official sub-4.
They will now compete twice in approximately 24 hours.
One competition can be decided by a favorable scramble set or one unusually strong round. Back-to-back appearances offer a wider test of consistency. Another sub-4 average would be historic, but the more immediate question may simply be which competitor controls the weekend.
Will Tymon and Leo Compete in Zhanjiang?
Zhanjiang’s psych sheet also lists Tymon Kolasiński and Leo Borromeo, likely connected to their time in China for the GAN Smartcubing Super League.
Tymon appears as the fourth 3x3 seed with a 4.49 average, behind Yiheng, Xuanyi, and Zhaokun Li. Leo is seeded tenth at 5.04.
Their registrations come with an important asterisk. International competitors appearing on a psych sheet does not guarantee they will make the trip to the venue, and their participation may not be clear until competition day.
Should both attend, Zhanjiang becomes more than another meeting between China’s leading 3x3 solvers. Tymon would have another opportunity to test himself directly against Yiheng and Xuanyi, while Leo would join a field featuring several of the world’s fastest 3x3 competitors.
British Columbia Completes Its Championship
BC Championship 2026 takes place August 7-9 at the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront in Vancouver.
The competition completes British Columbia’s two-week provincial championship. BC Quiet Championship awarded the Fewest Moves, 4x4 Blindfolded, 5x5 Blindfolded, and Multi-Blind titles last weekend. The remaining events, including 3x3 Blindfolded, will be decided at the main championship.
This is only the second BC Championship. The inaugural event was held in Nanaimo in 2024, where Luke Jankowiak won the 3x3 final with a 7.71 average. Timothy Castle also recorded 7.71 but finished second, while Ash Black placed third at 7.93.
The championship has grown significantly in its second edition. The 2024 competition featured 136 competitors, while this year’s event reached its 230-person limit.
Luke returns as the defending winner but enters only fourth on the 3x3 psych sheet with a 6.65 average. American Asher Kim-Magierek leads the field at 5.56, followed by Ethan Rusnak at 6.28 and Micah Yeo at 6.59. Brian Sun, Adhiyan Kumaresan, and Xuanyu Sun are also seeded below seven seconds, giving the final considerably more depth than the inaugural championship.
Although international and out-of-province competitors can win the overall event, the highest-placing British Columbia resident in each event will receive the provincial title.
After four specialist events were decided last weekend, Vancouver will now crown the rest of British Columbia’s champions, with Luke trying to defend his 3x3 victory against a much faster field.
PSL Michigan Sends Its Winner to Las Vegas
PSL Michigan takes place August 8 in Port Huron, with the winner earning a place at the PSL Championship in Las Vegas.
Patrick Ponce and Morgan Yeh enter as the favorites, but the field also includes Miles Reavis and Owen Stotts, better known on YouTube as StuCube.
The Michigan winner will join a championship field that already includes Dylan Miller, Kyle Santucci and Valerio Locatelli.
Kyle enters as the reigning North American 3x3 champion after winning the NAC final with a 5.63 average, defeating Matty Hiroto Inaba and Max Park. Valerio finished second at the European Championship with a 5.74 average, placing ahead of Tymon Kolasiński’s 5.90.
That means Saturday is not simply about winning another PSL stop. The champion will earn the opportunity to face two competitors who reached the podium at their respective continental championships within the past month.
Unlike a traditional WCA competition, PSL places competitors directly against each other in an elimination bracket. Patrick and Morgan may be the expected matchup, but Miles, Owen, or another competitor only needs to survive the bracket in front of them.
The winner will leave Michigan with a ticket to Las Vegas and a place alongside two of the most accomplished 3x3 competitors of the 2026 season.

The weekend brings three different forms of pressure. Yiheng and Xuanyi will compete on consecutive days, British Columbia will complete its provincial championship, and one PSL competitor will leave Port Huron with a ticket to Las Vegas.
