In Episode 23, Michael Rosenkranz sits down with Dan Smith, The WCA’s executive director. Dan has had a cube since 1981 but didn’t compete until he was 50, after he rediscovered the cube and beat his high-school time of 54 seconds. He discusses how writing a training guide for new delegates got him noticed by the WCA board, and why he ended up applying for the CEO position himself, after the first hire bailed two weeks into the job.
About the clock decision, he reveals how the board’s opinion-makers took it (mostly anger, he says) and admits that announcing FTO on the same day was a mistake.
There’s the Kansas multi-blind record he set of 56, along with the 800 volunteers’ monthly open call. And what kind of guy would be in charge of all that, despite walking into his first competition as “some nerd in a room full of kids”?
