Botswana to Host First Official WCA Competition in 2026
Gaborone will host Botswana’s first official World Cube Association competition in November 2026.
The World Cube Association has officially announced Botswana Nationals 2026, marking the first ever official WCA competition to be held in Botswana.
The competition is scheduled to take place on November 18, 2026, in Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana, at the Botswana National Museum and Art Gallery.
The event represents a major milestone for speedcubing in the country and another step forward for the continued growth of official cubing competitions across Africa. The World Cube Association has steadily expanded into new regions over the past decade, with longtime WCA Delegate Ron van Bruchem playing a key role in helping bring official competitions to developing cubing communities around the world.
Botswana’s official WCA history is still extremely small. So far, only one competitor has ever officially represented Botswana in the 3x3 event in WCA competition history.
That competitor is Thomas ter Haar, who recorded a 47.38 3x3 average at North Carolina Championship 2025 in the United States. His counting solves were 46.65, 48.41, and 47.08.
Botswana Nationals 2026 will give local cubers the opportunity to compete officially within their own country for the first time.
First official competitions often become foundational moments for developing cubing scenes. Beyond rankings and records, they create local visibility, introduce new competitors to organized competition, and help establish long-term community growth.
Botswana now joins a growing list of African nations hosting official WCA competitions as speedcubing continues expanding globally.
